The South Side
As you emerge from Kauai's historic tree tunnel you'll enter the town of Koloa on Kauai's sunny south shore. In 1835, Koloa opened its doors to one of the most prominent sugar plantations of its time. Today downtown Koloa still holds its plantation day charm with many small shops and restaurants centralized within walking distance.Calm crystalline waters and golden sand beaches surround Kauai's south shore. Poipu Beach Park once voted "one of Americas top ten best beaches" is protected by a gradual tombolo or sand bar creating ideal conditions for swimming and snorkeling. For those looking for a bit more adrenaline head down the road and catch some waves at one of the many surf breaks Poipu has to offer.

Go to the beach
The south side is renowned for some of the best beaches on the island. Poipu Beach Parks golden sand turquoise water makes it perfect for swimming, sun bathing , snorkeling or surfing.
Take a Hike
Enjoy the Maha'ulepuu Trail also known as the Kauai Heritage Trail following ancient coastline form Shipwreck Beach to Keoneloa Bay. There you will discover breath taking views of the south shore. The hike totals roughly 2 miles each way.
Driving past the Beach House Restaurant on Lawai Rd lies Spouting horn, a spectacular Blowhole said to have been once guarded by an ancient Hawaiian water lizard. Originally created by cooled molten lava, today tidal surges push water through the blowhole creating an explosion of water into the air.
Learn to surf
He'enalu or the art of surfing has been in ancient Hawaiian culture since before Capitan Cooks arrival in 1769. Today Poipu Beach Surf School offers lessons for those looking to learn.
During the winter months the south side of Kauai offers visitors some of the best diving on the island.
